Here is the critique and once again many many thanks for all your
kindnesses.
Thank you all for such a lovely show, and for the most gracious gifts! I
love my bowl - and use the watch as it has a nice large 'face' and easily seen
especially when I ride.
The Afghan breed is certainly in good shape, and a big congratulations to the breeders. The dogs, in general, are of high quality, quite sound and nicely balanced. Naturally there is always room for improvement, and if I were to pick a few places to be concerned with - I would keep in mind bite (teeth) as there were a few with crooked lower incisors. Elegance is the trademark of the breed so long as power and speed are not sacrified and for the most part that was the case. There were some male dog heads that were almost too heavy, but not a major concern. Just be careful when breeding . Temperament, always a sensitive area with all sight hounds! For the most part this was not a breed problem, and the few individuals unhappy with the situation, these dogs should be treated to walks in city or busy areas and have strangers touch and give treats. I find this works well with my young hounds. Balance - most all were quite well balanced and with moderate body length. Far too often, in other areas we find long backed dogs, not in Switzerland! Shoulders were for the most part well laid back and sloping, although a few sit slightly forward and open at the wither. This does not allow the upper arm to return back under the shoulder. When this happens the dog does not have a suspended long and elastic gait. The size in general was good with a very few too small and lacking bone and again a very few were too tall and heavy. This was not a problem in the breed.
Grooming was well done and not a single clipped saddle or underline. I would say that handling by owners is a completely refreshing experience for any U.S. judge. The dogs were happy as were the owners. A few handling classes would be helpful and fun for both!! But not a necessity.
As far as quality goes, there was not a big difference between dogs and bitches. Usually bitches are more uniform in both type and movement and dogs vary more in size and style. I think that was true with this specialty as well. Some males have more attitude, more coat, more size, etc, which gives them that 'showy' appeal, (the problem with some males in the show ring is that they want to "advertise" and up goes the tail) and up goes all four legs, so movement is a bounce instead of a glide. But as far as actual quality goes, I would say there was little difference. The winners were obviously those dogs and bitches which truly said "Afghan" and which type and soundness exemplified the breed.
